In the fall of 1997, the Alabama Ballet initiated a new apprenticeship program. Twenty young dancers from around the United States including Chicago, New Orleans, Indianapolis, and New York were invited to train full time with the professional company.
They perform the roles of the corps de ballet and understudy principal and soloist roles in preparation for their professional careers. Three of these young apprentices were selected to compete in the 1998 USA International Ballet Competition held in Jackson, MS.
